How do I put my DSL modem into bridge mode?

Bridge mode turns your SmartRG DSL modem into a pass-through device so your own router handles the connection. These steps apply to the SmartRG SR616ac, SR516ac, SR630n, and SR360n.

Before you start

  • You'll need your PPPoE username and password — after bridging, your own router makes the connection with these credentials. Contact support to get them before you begin.
  • Home phone warning: if your phone plugs into the modem's phone ports, contact support before bridging so we can keep your phone service working.
  • Bridging disables the modem's WiFi and routing. To undo it later, a factory reset restores the modem — but it will then need to be re-provisioned, so we recommend calling us rather than experimenting.

Bridge the modem

  1. On a device connected to the modem, open a browser and go to http://192.168.1.1/admin.
  2. Log in with username admin and password ekw7566V.
  3. Click Advanced Setup in the left menu.
  4. Click WAN Service. If anything is listed in the Wide Area Network (WAN) Service Setup table, check its Remove box and click Remove.
  5. Click Layer2 InterfaceATM Interface. Remove anything listed in the DSL ATM Interface Configuration table.
  6. Click Add on the ATM Interface page. Set VPI and VCI for your region:
    • Ontario / Quebec: 0 and 35
    • Alberta / BC: 0 and 33
    • Other provinces: contact support for the correct values.
  7. If you see Path0 (Fast) and Path1 (Interleaved) checkboxes, check both (newer firmware hides these — that's fine). Click Apply/Save.
  8. Click PTM Interface. Remove anything listed, then click Add, check Path0/Path1 if shown, and click Apply/Save.
  9. Click WAN ServiceAdd. Select atm0 from the dropdown → Next → choose Bridging as the service type → NextApply/Save.
  10. Click Add again. This time select ptm0Next → choose Bridging.
  11. Set 802.1P Priority to 0 and 802.1Q VLAN ID to 35 (same values in every province).
  12. Click Next, then Apply/Save.

Connect your router

  1. Connect your router's WAN/Internet port to a LAN port on the modem.
  2. In your router's setup, choose PPPoE as the internet connection type and enter the PPPoE username and password we gave you.
  3. Once the router connects, set up your WiFi name and password in the router.
